Contents and Building Home Insurance Affected by Twitter Usage
It has been revealed by a leading insurance website that an individual's Twitter usage could directly affect their ability to access cheaper contents and building home insurance premiums. Confused.com expressed that cheaper policies may not be available for those using social networking sites due to the higher risks of potential burglaries.
The rise of social networking sites over the past few years has been immense, particularly in 2009 when unknown site Twitter burst onto the scene. Most recently Twitter added a GPS application allowing followers to establish where 'tweets' came from, a factor which could reveal empty properties to those wishing to commit a burglary. Meanwhile the lack of concern by many over the amount of information they post on networks such as Facebook has urged industry experts to warn that as a result, more expensive premiums may be noted.
As a trio of developers launched PleaseRobMe, a website that highlights the amount of information pertaining to empty homes on the internet, a spokesperson for Confused.com said "On one end we're leaving lights on when we're going on a holiday and on the other we're telling everybody on the internet we're not home." They added that by posting home phone numbers on websites, thieves could establish home addresses, increasing the risk of a possible burglary. With this then increasing the risk that individuals have to make contents or building home insurance claims due to damage, large numbers of consumers could be hit by bigger prices.
