Contents Home Insurance Claims Aided by Fire Guards
As Britain continues to face one of the coldest winters in decades, a number of insurers are urging individuals of the need for extra vigilance, particularly when it comes to heating, to avoid damage. With homes becoming cold, and many individuals stoking up more chimney fires than normal, warnings have been issued over the importance of using fire guards to protect against having to make buildings and contents home insurance claims.
The warning came as the Isle of Man fire service reported that a woman had been taken to hospital after experiencing negative effects of smoke inhalation. As the blaze, which broke out after fireplace material fell out of the hearth onto a rug, took hold it took firemen nearly 45 minutes to get the flames under control. Causing a considerable amount of damage to both the building and contents, fire chiefs urged vigilance when it came to having home fires. This includes using fire guards to stop embers and burning material from landing on flammable substances, and not piling coals or timbers to high in the heath.
They also warned that even though individual's may have been having fire's for years, a long winter and therefore continuous use may have caused complacency amongst some residents, causing their guard to be down and the risk of a fire to be higher. If a building or contents home insurance claim does need to be made, they added that it is important for damage to be recorded through photographs or videos in addition to copies of repair quotes to be sent to insurers before any payments are made.
