Health Insurance Comparison Sites Offer Protection for Skilled Workers
In a bid to help a widening market in consumer skills, it has been revealed that several insurance companies have changed policies to support skilled workers who cannot carry out their trained profession after injury. With health insurance comparison websites offering a vital service for professionals to take advantage of the new schemes, industry experts are heralding the move as a positive step for supporting highly skilled and often vital individuals to society.
One of the insurers who decided to change their policies was Aviva, a firm who expressed that the "suited" profession definition became difficult especially for certain cases where a surgeon could injure their finger. This could then impact their ability to carry out professional work, limiting work to possible administrative or consultancy work. "These highly-skilled individuals presented the highest risk in terms of claims costs so, until recently, they were only offered suited occupation cover," explained a spokesperson for Aviva, adding that new options allowed the choice of either "own occupation" or "suited" roles.
Meanwhile Bupa also added a number of own occupation variants to their policies, including lecturers, dentists and surgeons, whilst Legal & General removed a contract definition which allowed claims only to be valid if individuals' couldn't work at all.
However, whilst the industry has become more sympathetic to professional's needs, the costs of such contracts can be extreme, with Aviva revealing that some individuals could note 70per cent premium rises. It is therefore essential for professionals, when looking at changing to better injury insurance, to make use of health insurance comparison sites to ensure higher costs result in the most effective protection.
