Liverpool Victoria home insurance provider recommends cover
The increasingly complex nature of new cars sold in Britain makes taking out breakdown cover advisable, the provider of Liverpool Victoria home insurance has said.
According to the property and contents home insurance firm, just five per cent of drivers have an "excellent" understanding of their car's engine - while only four per cent would feel "confident" in fixing breakdowns.
It was suggested by Liverpool Victoria that this is because of "complicated" new models coming on to the market.
Moreover, motorists seem to agree: 37 per cent of drivers even admitted that they "don't understand" their own dashboards, for example.
Emma Holyer at rescue firm Britannia agreed, saying: "There is little doubt that innovation has made driving a far more pleasurable experience, but it has made part time weekend mechanics a thing of the past.
"This means it is even more vital that motorists take out breakdown cover, so if something does go wrong with their car they are able to get back on the road as easily and quickly as possible."
The Liverpool Victoria study also found that 74 per cent of people could not repair their own cars.
