esure home and contents insurance releases garden study

Increasing numbers of garden thefts might result from homeowners' lack of storage space, new research from esure home and contents insurance suggests.

According to the home owner insurance provider's study, 11 per cent of householders will be spending more than £500 on garden equipment, tools and furniture this year.

However, 93 per cent were also found to leave items in the garden at night - a perhaps unsurprising fact, given that there are also 650,000 British households falling victim to garden theft annually.

A lack of space was found to be a "key reason" behind this trend, esure claims.

Moreover, the storage problem is so acute that 30 per cent of people are keeping non-garden related items in unsecure outbuildings such as sheds.

Commenting, Mike Pickard at esure said: "The trend towards converting useful storage space into valuable living space and the nation's obsession with hoarding clutter is putting pressure on garden storage and may cause a surge in garden theft as belongings are left unsecured and vulnerable."
