Sainsbury's home insurance: Brits missing out on contents cover
Around one in ten UK adults hold no home contents insurance, new research from Sainsbury's home insurance has shown.
Londoners were found to have the highest proportion of uninsured people, with 22 per cent of the adult population missing out on the cover.
In total, around 4.7 million Britons do not hold the home insurance, Sainsbury's said.
Neil Laird, home insurance manager at Sainsbury's, said that the firm's findings were "remarkable", especially considering the high value of home contents held by many people.
"Home insurance does not have to be expensive. You can spread the cost over the course of a year and some insurers, including ourselves, will not charge for this," he added.
When asked why they did not hold home contents insurance cover, 35 per cent of poll respondents said that they did not think it was "necessary" - while 14 per cent said that they "could not afford" it.
